Raccoon

Procyon lotor

Appearance

Raccoons are medium-sized mammals with gray fur, black “mask markings” around their eyes, and bushy tails with black rings. They are excellent climbers and well-known for their clever problem-solving skills.

Range

Raccoons are native to North America and can be found from southern Canada down to Central America. They are highly adaptable and can thrive in woodlands and urban environments.

Diet

Raccoons are opportunistic omnivores, meaning they eat whatever is most readily available. Their diet can include aquatic creatures, fruits, vegetables, grains, pet food, human food, and even garbage.

Who You’ll Meet

Grace

DOB: May 2023 In the summer of 2023 both Grace and Frankie were brought to Appalachian Wildlife Refuge. Both were found very young and were deemed un-releasable. Grace has lighter fur and shorter muzzle. She lives with Frankie and interacts well, but they are not related.

Frankie

DOB: June 2023 Frankie’s fur is a little darker than Grace’s, and she has a long muzzle. Raccoons are active and intelligent animals, so our keepers are constantly finding new ways to keep Grace and Frankie engaged. Their habitat often includes a variety of enrichment items, particularly geared towards engaging their sensitive tactile senses.
