Current Project: New Animal Kitchen

We’re excited to share that a new commissary is going to be built with a huge walk-in freezer, tons of dry storage, and the extra room (about three times the space that we have now!) to prepare meals and enrichment for our animals!

The Friends of the WNC Nature Center have already committed $100,000 to help with this project, but we need you to help us
stock the kitchen! With your gift, we can purchase the necessary equipment and supplies to complete the new kitchen.

It’ll cost around $12,500 to buy a commercial-grade dishwasher, garbage disposal, water heater, and sink. Your donation directly supports the care of the animals at the Nature Center!

Plus, moving the current animal kitchen will allow the WNC Nature Center to make room for a brand-new animal exhibit at Appalachian Station as early as next year!

If you give $250 or more, you’ll be invited in the spring to join our Nature Center Director Chris Gentile for a behind the scenes tour of the new kitchen! This will include the chance for you to help prepare
some enrichment for our animals and watch them enjoy it!

Coming Soon: Butterfly Exhibit

The WNC Nature Center will be adding a permanent butterfly exhibit, complete with pollinator gardens and an immersive experience for guests! Starting in 2023 with an estimated completion date of 2025, this exhibit will be a part of the Gateway to the Southern Appalachians experience near the Front Entrance and barn.

Qualified Charitable IRA Distributions

Donate part or all of your unused retirement assets and support the Friends of the WNC Nature Center through a Qualified Charitable Distribution! Qualified Charitable Distribution allows IRA holders to donate tax-free to a qualified charity from their Traditional or Roth IRA (including inherited). Contact your financial advisor or tax preparer to learn how to donate to the Friends of the WNC Nature Center from your IRA tax-free.

The WNC Nature Center Endowment Fund

By giving to the WNC Nature Center Fund at the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina, you help ensure the long-term sustainability of the Nature Center and its programs. Your gift to the Fund will have a lasting impact far into the future. You can make a gift of cash, property, or stock to the Fund.
