Marketing & Events Intern, Friends of the WNC Nature Center

Overview

The Friends is a vital partner with the WNC Nature Center. With its donors and members, the Friends enriches the Nature Center’s mission to connect people with the plants and animals of the Southern Appalachian Mountains.

As a conservation organization, the Friends inspires a passion to know more, care more, and do more for the wildlife of the Southern Appalachian Mountains.

The Friends advances the critical work of the WNC Nature Center by supporting its growth and development through fundraising, membership, educational outreach, marketing, and volunteer services.

Role of the Marketing & Events Intern

The Marketing & Events Intern works under the direct supervision of the Marketing & Events Manager and assists with both marketing and onsite event production for the Friends of the WNC Nature Center.

This is a hands-on position that combines creative marketing work with in-person event support. The intern will help create social media and other promotional content, assist with event planning and production, and serve as a staff representative at weekend birthday parties and other events at the Nature Center.

Through this internship, the individual will gain experience in professional content creation, writing, digital marketing, event production, customer service, and measuring the impact of marketing efforts.

This is a part-time, paid position. Weekend availability (preferably Saturday) is required, as birthday parties and other events are a regular part of this position. 

Responsibilities

Marketing & Communications

• Create social media content following guidelines and the content calendar set by the Marketing & Events Manager
• Write and edit content, including animal updates, blog posts, community calendar listings, and event descriptions
• Update community digital calendars to promote current events and programs
• Assist with photography and gathering content for social media and other marketing materials
• Organize the Friends’ digital image library
• Assist with other marketing projects as needed

Events & Guest Experience

• Serve as the Friends’ staff contact at weekend birthday parties, including setting up and cleaning up, greeting and assisting guests, and helping ensure the event runs smoothly
• Assist with event preparation, setup, staffing, and breakdown for Friends programs and events
• Provide friendly, professional customer service to Nature Center guests and event participants
• Assist with other onsite events and programs as needed

Qualifications

• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Interest in marketing, communications, events, nonprofit work, conservation, or a related field
• Comfortable working independently and as part of a team
• Friendly, dependable, organized, and comfortable interacting with the public
• Basic knowledge of social media platforms
• Willingness to work some weekends and occasional evenings
• Ability to lift and move event supplies and stand/walk for extended periods as needed

Pay:

$18/hr. 

Hours and Internship Term:

10 hours per week. Minimum 6-month commitment. There is some flexibility with scheduling. At least 4 hours are required on most Saturdays.
